"Update iCloud for Windows to the latest version to sign in" Error

I keep getting an "Update iCloud for Windows to the latest version to sign in" error when I try to sign in to iTunes. iCloud and iTunes are updated to the newest versions available from the Microsoft Store. I've uninstalled iTunes and iCloud multiple times and I still can't sign in on iTunes.

I'm wondering if Advanced Data Protection could be causing this because it worked fine until I turned it on.

Edit: I turned off Advanced Data Protection and was able to sign in to iTunes. So yeah, it looks like ADP breaks iTunes on Windows.

Spoke with Apple Support. "With 16.2 just released, this may be an emerging issue."

Options are:

  • Disable ADP to see if it works (seems like it would, based on OPs experience)
  • Wait for a new version of iCloud for Windows (only available through the Microsoft Store) and/or a new version of iTunes.

Same issue here, after enabling ADP. Sounds like they just haven't updated iTunes, because I can log into the iCloud app just fine after updating that. Likely only impacting people that use iCloud Music Library, which makes sense as it does require an iCloud login to use that.

Shame that they didn't think to roll this out in time for ADP coming out, or chose not to for some reason. The web version of Apple Music is asscheeks.

This must have been a backend issue Apple fixed overnight, I got the usual popup asking for my password this morning and put it in. iTunes logged in fine this time, no update on the user end. Just make sure you're updated to the latest from the Microsoft store and it should be ok:

iCloud software version 14.108.0

iTunes software version 12127.1.57051.0

Having the same issue of being unable to sign into iTunes.

Windows, iCloud and iTunes were updated to the latest version available in the Microsoft store yesterday:

iCloud software version 14.108.0

iTunes software version 12127.1.57051.0

Windows 11 - 22H2 version 22621.963

I uninstalled and reinstalled iCloud as well as just tried to uninstall it altogether and just use iTunes but the same error persists.

I did have an issue with the perpetual "you are not signed into Apple Music" ... when I was... this worked:

"I have the same issue on Windows 10. What is do is i right-click on the song and select "Show in Apple Music" (It will go to "Browse" tab). While in there I play the song. Then i go back to the "Library" to play other "Apple Music" song, and it works !!"

In an effort to try to figure this out...

My iTunes was originally installed via Apple Direct Download (you can tell if the "Help" menu has a "Check for Updates," if it does not, it was downloaded/installed from Microsoft Store).

I tried uninstalling iTunes, rebooted, then re-installed iTunes from Microsoft store. This also installed 12.12.7(.1) which exhibits the exact same behavior. I uninstalled from Microsoft Store, rebooted, re-installed iTunes from an old Apple direct installer (12.12.2.2), updated to 12.12.7.1 via Apple Software Update, same issue...

Also, I made the mistake of actually "Signing Out" of iTunes and have now lost all ability to play, even see, Apple Music. Previously, I was able to still play most songs, with a perpetual login prompt interrupting every new track from playing but clicking "Cancel" at least allowed the song to play.
