Locked out of the gmail app on iphone

I was suddenly kicked out of my gmail account on my Gmail app last weekend for “suspicious activity” (it was my usage, based on the location information my account showed, so it shouldn’t have been flagged as suspicious in the first place).

In trying to log back in, I’m able to access my gmail on my Mac and via a Safari tab on my phone, but continue to be locked out of the app — see the images for the flow it sends me through and error messages I get. I know my pw is correct, and every time I go through this flow (until I go thru it enough times so as to temporarily get locked out for trying too many times), I get an email that my account has been restored…but for some reason my iPhone won’t let the app login work.

I tried deleting and reinstalling the app, clearing cache and all history (losing 100+ tabs in doing so 😭), and went to the Apple Store for help but nothing they tried resolved the issue.

Any suggestions to get the Gmail app functioning again?

I do not want to add my gmail account to the iPhone mail client - I want to keep that for work. Thanks!
