An Apple Watch 6 is perfectly capable of being updated to the lates WatchOS 9.4. But in order to update it to the most current WatchOS version, it MUST be paired with an iPhone which can fun iOS 16 (the current version is 16.4.1 (a). This means to run the most current WatchOS version on your watch, you must own iPhone 8 or newer.
