iPod touch 4th gen won't let me sign into iMessage or Facetime

My iPod now for nearly a year has not been letting me sign into iMessage saying that "the password or username was incorrect" even though I have just signed into this community thing with the same apple id and password with no problem and its seriously ******* me off. Same thing is happening with when I try and sign into Facetime. Note that before this I have used iMessage before and was already signed in and one day it just logged me out for no reason and won't let me back in. Any help or troubleshooting would help as I've tried to reset the iPod, turned it off and back on and nothing has worked.

Hello giacomo297,

Since your Apple ID is working in other places, one thing that could be the cause is two-factor authentication. Do you have the two-factor authentication security enabled on your Apple ID account? (where you have to enter a 6 digit verification code when you sign in)

If you do, you'll have to make sure you're entering the code when you're signing in. Because of how old the iPod is, it predates the two-factor authentication security that Apple ID accounts now use. On a modern device you'll get a specific pop-up area to enter the verification code on its own, on a vintage/obsolete device like this iPod, you would not.

If you do have an Apple ID account with two-factor authentication, the way to sign in on an old device like this would be by entering the verification code in the password field right after the password. So for example, if your password is "Apple" and the verification code you get is "123456", you would enter "Apple123456" (no spaces between the password and code) in the password field when you're trying to sign in. If you have an Apple ID with two-factor authentication and haven't been entering the verification code, then it will give you an error about the name or password being wrong.
