What happens when you try? Is the wifi login/welcome page not displaying? If the login/welcome page does not load in the browser, try inserting any ip address into the browser's url field. This may force the login/welcome page to load.

When "ku4hx" says "AP", I think that's an abbreviation for "access point". The WiFi access points are part of the airport's network, are under control of the airport, and are what allow computers to connect wirelessly.

Some WiFi networks are set up so that to successfully connect to the AP, you need to

(1) have a WiFi password, or

(2) have a security certificate installed on your computer that can be verified by an authentication server as part of the association process.

The Mac displays the names of such networks with a little lock icon next to them.

Some networks are set up so that once your computer has associated with the AP, the equipment at the edge of the network traps requests to access the Internet, and puts up a Web-based authentication or welcome screen, instead.

I've seen it done both ways at restaurants around here.
