What is the error message you're receiving? If updating is not working, you might want to boot your Mac in the safe mode and attempt your update from there
Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode
For Intel macs
This restart does NOT work on my Intel Mac. I tried it twice and it never did ask if I want to boot in safe mode. It just froze up. The third time, I just did a regular startup and it took forever, but it finally did get past the black screen of death to the sign-in page.
When I checked the option to "Install the update" it first went though an hour long process called "preparing your Mac ready for update." Finally, it began the update and when the update got to "15 minutes remaining" it just froze there forever. I waited for almost 2 hours and it did nothing. The computer was unresponsive to anything I tried so I turned it off at the power button.
When it finally restarted, I tried the process again with the same outcome. I've spent all day trying to update to Ventura 13.5. The last time I pressed the power button and turned the computer off I didn't think it was ever going to boot up again - I really thought it was a goner!
Eventually after about 30 minutes, it restarted to the login screen. Even then it took quite a while to get everything ready so I could use the computer again. To my surprise, the "Update needed" prompt was no longer on the gear icon. I checked my preferences and I am still running Ventura 13.4.1 so it did not update.
A few hours later, I sat down at the computer again and now it is prompting me to install the update to Ventura 13.5 again. I certainly did not do it. I don't know what's wrong with it, but it will not install on my Mac desktop.
I was told to restore my operating system on my Intel-based MAC desktop. To do that on the desktop, click on start if the computer is off or restart if it is running and when it begins to restart hold down the shift key and the letter R key and continue to hold them down. THEN the options will appear asking what you want to do. Restore from Macintosh hard drive. It took awhile for it to complete this restore, BUT when the computer came back up, it had the new version Ventura 13.5 installed on it. The reboot sequence may be different on a MacBook.
