Middle of the Night Stand Reminders on Apple Watch

I've been woken in the middle of the night to stand up...again. I get notified on my watch while I am sleeping. I do not have a sleep focus set up but I do have DND on at that time. Why is it doing this? I've been struggling getting notifications in general, especially messages on my new phone (15+) and watch (series 7) and rebooted my watch and iphone last night before bed. Notifications seem to be working now but I don't want to stand up during my DND time.

iPhone 15 Plus, iOS 17

Hey Mam991

Did you ever get a resolution on this? I’m up at 5am because I got that watch haptic alert 10 minutes ago, coaxing me to stand, at 4:50 am, really? Now I’m researching the same issue and came upon your thread. I hope you’re not going to be disturbed about this reply on your thread until a sane time of day!!

I have the same problem as the OP and I have the same settings:

Mirror iPhone’s Focus settings

I have NO APPS allowed during Sleep focus

I have NO PEOPLE allowed during Sleep focus

This watch will still vibrate on my wrist in the middle of the freaking night, in SLEEP mode, with NO APPS allowed.

The answer is not, as you suggest, to be forced by Apple to adjust my daily stand goals in order to accommodate the Apple Watch’s inexplicable idiosyncrasies. The smart watch should be smart enough to know if it’s 3 AM and I have sleep mode on; it should not vibrate on my wrist to wake me to stand!

Exactly, nemo. Why would Apple devs ask the Watch to ignore our Sleep settings 😳 (Sleep=no apps and no people allowed to disturb) in order to send a wrist vibration at any hour, day or night? 🤓💀

Even if my personal goal is to stand up once per hour for 12 hours, the watch should be smart enough to realize I do not want to do this while I am sleeping. 🙃

Since the geniuses at Apple haven’t come up with solution, I have had to disable stand notifications entirely.🫠

I have this too, I was woken last night with a stand reminder at 02:50am. Just had the watch a few days and trying to figure it out. Googled because I thought I must be missing the ‘don’t wake me up to tell me to stand in the middle of the night’ setting. Astonished to have found this thread. Kind of reassuring it’s not just me. FYI I had disabled the sleep focus before I went to bed, because that was putting my phone and laptop into sleep focus and (I think) making the watch display go turn off in the evening. I don’t want sleep focus, it’s actually important I get woken up by alerts in the night. But I do want the display to be dim when I’m asleep. Must be missing something, this functionality seems BONKERS. Will go to a Genius Bar and report back.

Well, yes I did. I made that appointment with the genius bar. I also traded in my watch for a 9. I am sorry I don't remember exactly the changes we made, there were a couple. I believe that the changing of the focus/dnd in the control center was the fix because I wasn't having this issue anymore when I went in. It was the notifications or lack of that was driving me nuts and getting texts without realizing I got one. Still an issue at times but it's the fact that my phone and my watch are so close together most of the time, or at least that's what I was told. That was one of the fixes they did at the g bar, btw. I also turned on the vibrate on my phone and that helps me realize I need to pick up my phone if my watch isn't telling me what I need.

What you're seeing is not normal behavior. If this is what you're seeing, there's something wrong with your watch. The first step would be to unpair and re-pair it to your iPhone. I would also consider disabling and reenabling Sleep. Sometimes Focus can get gummed up.

You can adjust your Daily Stand goal. Here's how:

  • Tap to open the Fitness/exercise ring app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the rings then scroll down to Change Goals.
  • On my Apple Watch, it takes three taps to see the Change Stand Goal.

From there, you can change how many hours per day you will be notified to stand. While you cannot specify which hours you want to be notified, I have mine set to 8 hours and that seems to work for me.

But here is another consideration - check your DND Focus settings to make sure it is blocking everything you want. To do this, open Focus, then tap the three horizontal dots next to Do Not Disturb. Then check that it shows No Apps Allowed.

On my Watch, between these two settings, Reminders to Stand are off until I wake up.

If you don’t want to setup a DND schedule on the Apple Watch. Open Focus in settings on the Watch and set it to mirror your iPhone. Set the DND from the iPhone. Why you have to do it this way I don’t know. The purple moon means DND.

The only other way is to Settings… Sounds and Hepatics… is to turn down the Alert Volume. Meaning when you get up you need to turn Alert Volume back up… that suxs.

I usually leave my iPhone at home. What if I get into a situation where I need to silence my watch and I don’t have my iPhone with me. Messing with the Alert Volume just suxs.
