What 30" monitors will work with old MacPro 10.6.8?

My Apple 30” Cinema HD display is cutting out. It might only be the DVI adapter box, which I’ve replaced before, and already ordered another. But soon there won’t be any more of these on eBay, so I’d like to get another, new monitor - hopefully one that can connect directly to the Mac and not an adapter, and can use the same port without an expensive hardware/card upgrade.

I know a limitation will be the default connection the MacPro has. Don’t know what this connection is called but attached is a pic. Another forum user says its “Dual-link DVI”.

I want to keep this MacPro running OS 10.6.8 to use obsolete legacy apps. (I have a newer iMac too)

It must have 2560 resolution. Color accuracy isn’t critical. Does it have to be an Apple monitor?

Would appreciate a searchable term or links for compatible 30" monitors.

LMK if more info is needed...

There is no model of Mac Pro silver tower that is limited to 10.6.8 -- even the first one released can run 10.7.5.

what model-year is yours?

I still use a 30-in Apple cinema display, and it works fine. But I have been through more than one graphics card, as they run very HOT and fail often. I am not convinced you have a display problem, but would be happy to discuss that with you.

There is a specifications sticker. You have to put your head above the unit and look 'down its back'. On a shelf just below the display card cable, you will see a sticker, facing straight UP, with an abbreviated version of what Mac that actually is, and what configuration when it left the factory. (don't post the serial number, it attracts vermin.)

Your sticker actually SHOWS in the picture you posted of the graphics card connector. The sticker is gray with White type.

By FAR the most likely issue is another graphics card failure, rather than a display failure.

DON'T replace that very dated original graphics card like-for-like.

Best all round replacement card is a used Apple-firmware ATI/AMD 5770 card, Drivers were first included in 10.16.5. be certain to get an Apple-firmware card. Cards for a PC were available, but will not show Any "boot-up screens" so the display stays dark until you log in.

yes, I meant 10.6.5

Those numbers look up to Mac Pro 2010 which is supported for MacOS up to 10.11 El Capitan. You sticker appears to declare you have an 8 core processor.

The original graphics card was a GT120, which is not much or a graphics card, but is still available. The Apple-firmware 5770 would be a step up in graphics performance, although not world-changing.

What would make quite a performance difference, if you have not already done so, is a switch to an SSD boot drive. You can easily install a modest-sized SATA-3 speed drive on a special sled in any drive bay, and use that as your boot drive. having an SSD as the boot drive speeds up everything, even if you place your work files on other drives.

I was citing that behavior from memory.

so I decided to see what really happens when the display input is disconnected, and got a surprise.

With the input disconnected, the tinyt green LED at the bottom, about an inch in from the bottom right corner of the display, pulses slowly -- similar to the Mac's "I'm asleep" indicator.

so that can be used to tell whether the display thinks it is getting a signal.

Pulsing slowly = no signal

off = signal OK or display Off

Thanks for trying to help. I'm not sure if you answered my question or if I'm confused...

I havent bought a graphics card - the MacPro still has the original default one installed. I only bought a used adapter. The original (used) card you linked to is sold out...

Money is tight and I'm reluctant to shell out $130 for a graphics card that may or may not help one iota to fix the problem - which apparently got fixed (temporarily) with the replacement adapter.

MacPro is 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad core Intel Xeon / 32GB memory. IDK what year because the display currently won’t come on, but I’m connected to the MacPro via my iMac, if you know a way to look at its system info from the iMac.

The Cinema Display has been cutting out for years - suddenly going black with no rhyme or reason. I replaced the adapter once before and that seemed to fix it for a year or 2, but it started again last year. Then I found I could unplug the cord with the racetrack shaped plug from the adapter, and it would come on again when plugged back in. Strangely, this changes the brightness to half bright — and the keyboard brightness key won’t change it. So each time it comes on again, I have to hold the brightness button on the side of the display.

In the last few months its started going black multiple times in a row, or alternatively turning gray with a million pixels. Reconnecting that cord has always worked until last week, and now it won’t come on at all. Part of it might be the plug hole in the adapter isn’t as tight as it was with all that plugging unplugging…but I think its the adapter, and will have another (used one) next week.

I'd love to think the display isnt the problem - it cost a fortune.

Ps - The My subscriptions column seems to have populated now - when I checked yesterday there was nothing. But now it shows this same thread twice, and only one other post, although I’ve posted in Apple forums (every now and then) for decades with the same handle...

Pps - I still have and use long defunct Adobe Director, as well as own the full Adobe Creative Suite 6 (back when you could own CC, and not have to pay rent). Once you upgrade beyond 10.6.8, I learned those apps won’t work..

Thanks will keep that in mind. Its relegated to just a hobby station ATM - a really old one - so reluctant to put more $$ into it beyond keeping it alive. =0)

The replacement adapter worked to fix the monitor "cutting out" — for a week. But now the same issue has begun again - the screen just goes to black randomly on its own, multiple times in a row.

I'd like to know if an expensive (min. $130) new graphics card (like this one) is the best bet for fixing this, given that the adapter replacement did work for a time?

Apr 11, 2024 12:46 PM in response to onefiftymph

The 5870 is the original "high-end" card that shipped in the box. Compared to the 5770 released slightly later, the 5870 It runs hotter, requires more aux cables for more power, has louder fans, and is NOT substantially more capable that the 5770 -- they are about the same.

if you bought a 5770 from OWC and it failed in less than the typical 90 days warranty for such items, ask them to "make it right", and send you a replacement. (if they have none, ask them to send you that 5870 they have in stock at no charge as a warranty replacement card.)

The picture you posted is of an apple display Power Adapter. if replacing that got you picture on the display, you have achieved success!

you Likely do not need (and would not see discernible benefit from) a new graphics card.

what graphics card is installed now?

 menu > about this Mac (please don't post your serial number, it attracts vermin)

Apr 11, 2024 2:24 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

The card is the original NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 / 512MB VRAM

$70 for the used adapter and 2 wks later, same problem - intermittently cutting out thats fixed temporarily by unplugging and replugging the racetrack shaped plug from the adapter, and then holding in the button on the monitor to restore the brightness (that doesn't work via keyboard). On the previous adapter(s) - this latest is #4 - this unplugging/replugging eventually stops working.

Now it seems with the replacement adapter I'm back to square one. Don't know if I just have a series of bad luck getting faulty adapters, or something else is making them fail....

For now I can use the monitor and keep unplugging/replugging it until this adapter fails too. Sometimes it runs for hours without failing, other times like today, I had to unplug replug it 10 times...

Its just an ugly cycle and I had hoped maybe it wasnt the adapter causing it after all.

This is why the title question of my post seems to be the only remaining step, unless someone can offer another solution....

What 30" monitors will work with old MacPro 10.6.8?
