recently with in the past 2 weeks my iPhone tends to freeze when opening the iMessage app. Don’t know how to fix it or what to do.

Can I ask how you switch to a later version? I’m having this problem, and have tried all the suggestions above but nothing seems to work for longer than half a day. So frustrating! I just looked and I have iOS 17.5.1 but I don’t see option to change it?
glad to hear that the issue is fixed in the release that has the second letter of the greek alphabet in it. As I mentioned, the issue went away on my phone and I am on 17.6. Not saying that 17.6 fixed the issue, I just don't have it anymore. Upgrading to the next release, that has the second letter of the greek alphabet in it, might have many other issues though and one should search for currently known issues in that release before you upgrade. You might be trading one issue for many other.
August 15, 2024: This was happening as recent as a week ago for my family of 4. None of us could use Messages and we had to resort to using a different messaging app to community. As of today (8/15/24), nobody in my family has this issue anymore. Can anyone else confirm the issue is fixed for them too?
having the exact same issue and if I go to settings>messages, this stalls too. I've tried deleting the app, I've tried restarting the phone. This is unacceptable

This is super frustrating. Matt has repeatedly posted software advice that fixes the issue, as I have also after following his advice. Apple keeps taking those posts down. Shame on Apple….

Updated to 17.6 but the problem persists….
really annoying
When I go to open up, Messages, the screen is either frozen or black and when I try to go into settings to fix it and press anything that evolves the messages, my screen freezes on the settings too.
my iPhone 12 keep frozen when I try to edit message that I send. Please 🙏🏻 fix

I have an iPhone 16 and my dad has an iPhone 14 and both of our phones are doing the exact same thing can’t open them can’t close them can’t view them. Everything‘s frozen.
