Upgrading a 2023 MacPro from 2TB ssd storage to either 4 or 8TB storage.

I want to upgrade my 2023 MacPro from 2TB ssd storage to either 4 or 8TB ssd storage. Does anyone know if the 2TB ssd is one 2TB ssd or 2 1TB ssd. This will help me in my purchasing decision. I thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

You can also install many different devices using a variety of adapters in a PCIe slot.

Different PCIe slots adapters support one to up to four NVMe SSD sticks. The wider ones are expensive because they require a controller, because the Mac will not split an x16 into multiple independent x4 busses to support four separate devices, directly addressable. (so-called Bifurcation, not supported)

If this is a 2023 Mac Pro desktop minitower, there's something you ought to note. Before installing any internal SSD upgrade, you'll need to make full backups. After you install an upgrade, using the proprietary flash storage modules that Apple sells (the machine doesn't take M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs), you will need a second Mac, one that is running a special system management program (Apple Configurator 2?) to get the encryption/decryption keys in the M2 Ultra and the contents of the SSD in sync. Only then will you be able to reinstall macOS, and restore your backups.

Thank you for your reply. What I am trying to determine, the 2TB ssd that is already installed is a single 2TB drive or 2 1TB drives. If it a single 2TB drive is installed, I'll purchase an additional single 2TB drive which will increase the storage capacity to a total of 4TB. I guess I'll have to open the computer to see what was installed. Again, thank you for your reply - I appreciate it.

NO, you won't. There is no 'open' slot.

The Boot drive in Mac Studio is an Apple Proprietary design. The modules involved are not standard drives. Generally speaking, if you want a larger boot drive, you will have to discard or sell your current modules, and install all new Apple modules. If any, only the very lowest model uses only one module.

Anything else you try to install in the proprietary drive slots will cause your computer to NEVER boot again.

Most of the firmware is written to a private part of the boot drive, so you WILL need another computer running apple confugurtor as well.

That is why my previous reply listed other option s available to you internally.

Do you really need all this to be on the very fast and very expensive Boot drive?
