The ”I have an idea for an app” has long been a joke among app developers.

Save rare cases, ideas aren’t particularly valuable.

Implementations of those ideas, and preferably with markets willing to pay, can be.

The work involved is often immense, in comparison with the relative value of the idea.

Got a really good idea? Patent it, and license it.

There are lots of folks willing to directly profit from the folks with ideas, too. Some are sketchy.

+1 on patenting your idea.

I managed intellectual properties for a multi-product manufacturer and one of our divisions DID consider outside submissions, but only if they were already patented. That reduced our risks of having to deal with infringement claims from other patent holders because the invention had already been officially and thoroughly researched during the patent process.

Anyone interested in developing new products to including apps needs to be very familiar with this government site:

uspto.gov

to protect their own interests all well as those of potential clients.
