iPhone allows you to double click to use Apple Pay. It shows the Hold Near Reader but does not work regardless on the form of payment used.

I’m having this problem too. It was fine before I updated to iOS18. Now it works if I pay for something in an app, so the problem isn’t the card or the phone’s ability to charge to the card. The problem is the phone’s ability to communicate with the reader
it says hold to reader but nothing happens past that. I can use Apple Pay to purchase online or in apps I just can't use it on any reader. I've tried multiple readers that use Apple Pay and neither worked
Please contact Apple Support and they can do remote diagnostics on your NFC module on your iPhone. You can also make at appointment at a nearby Apple Store and the Genius Bar can do the diagnostics and assist with the issue.

Some stores/readers will not support Apple Pay, and some are just flakey. I've encountered many of the latter, where they should work but just won't pick up the device. Without knowing the specific store you're trying to use Apple Pay with, it's pretty difficult to offer much advice, though one tip is to make sure you're holding the top of the iPhone to the reader.

The original post was September 9, a full 7 days before iOS 18 was released. The other two posts are after the release and with two such posts, it seems pretty isolated.
Updates can cause malfunction in hardware. Have you had your NFC module checked?
So what exactly happens when you double click the side button?
the last update I made was the last time I was able to use my Apple Pay. I don't know how to fix it now.
Given that there is more than one person that began experiencing this problem only after a major iOS update, I would suggest the problem is unlikely to be device-specific
Removing the card & adding it again fixed the problem for me. There was no problem with the hardware
