Why is my Apple Watch 10 battery suddenly draining so fast?

I received my Apple Watch Series 10 on September 20 2024. Worked perfectly for one week then on September 29, it suddenly went from 80% at noon to 20% at 5 pm. I am tracking the time now but I can see that it is significantly losing power every hour. I rebooted, but it is still losing significant power. Unless I can come up with a solution, this watch is going back!

I took mine off charge at 5am today and by 12:30pm the battery was dead. Haven’t done any workouts. Infact I’ve hardly used it at all in that time. Up to now my series 7 that was at 81% battery health was lasting longer between charges than my series 10 watch is. The battery life was the main reason for me getting a new one too.

I also got mine on day one. It worked fine for weeks - then out of the blue it just drains. Charging time has gone from 30 mins or so to many many hours. I sent mine back and received a replacement. It does exactly the same thing. I setup as new, and restored from backup - it just keeps draining and then takes forever to charge.

I have tracked down the problem and it's not acceptable. It is my Iphone that is causing the problem. Both watch and phone on latest software release.

If I power off my phone (it's my work phone so this is not an option) then the battery suddenly stops draining.

I have removed most apps from my watch but it still does not help.

Watch has gone from 100% to 80% in less than 45 minutes. I have turned off my phone and the watch is still at 80%. So, there is definitely something going on between the phone and the watch.

Tried one more thing - turned off bluetooth on watch - powered on the phone - 79% after 30 seconds, then no more battery drain for 5 minutes. Turned back on Bluetooth on the watch, before 1 minute, 78%, 2 minutes in, 77%, 3 minutes in, 76% - Turned bluetooth off on the watch - dropped 2% rapidly then within 4 mins, down to 71% so I can only attribute this to communication somehow between the phone and the watch because when I turn off the phone, the watch stops losing power.
