Driver’s license in Apple Wallet

Shouldn’t my drivers license in my Apple Wallet have a picture of my license? It only has a graphic, my first name and last initial.

When the grocery store cards me for that bottle of wine, what do I do?

The store clerk should ask you to bring your phone close to the terminal to read the driver's license data through the terminal.

Beyond that, there is no way to show it to them as it's not designed to work for that purpose.

You should have your physical driver's license with you, if the store needs to see it.

No, there is no QR code or bar code to be scanned.

Just an FYI: For a California DL in the Wallet when you tap on information in the upper right corner the screen below comes up, then when you tap on "Driver's License Info" the DL info is displayed along with the DL holder's image but not an image of the actual DL itself. Just to add, authentication is required to access the DL information.

ID verifier security

In iOS 17 or later, US businesses and organisations can use iPhone to seamlessly and securely read ISO 18013-5–compliant mobile IDs in person — without the need for external hardware. ID Verifier can be used in two different ways, depending on the verification use case:

  • ID Verifier Display Only: This enables use of an iOS user interface to display Name, Age, ID Photo and Age Over N data for use cases that only require visual confirmation. This service doesn’t permit personally identifiable information (PII) collection that can be tied back to the presenter.

  • ID Verifier Data Transfer: This enables apps to request additional data elements, such as date of birth and address, in order to meet legal verification requirements. Access to the ID Verifier Data Transfer API is managed with entitlements, and apps must conform to requirements with respect to how data is used. For example, apps must demonstrate a legal requirement to request identity data. Apps are also required to maintain a privacy policy that details its processing, storage or other use of the requested identity data.

Some merchants will have hardware, transaction terminal, and you’ll have iPhone screen displaying your license and you’ll tap your iPhone somewhere on the terminal.

Merchants without the necessary hardware will require you to display additional information. This is accessed through the Information button (circle with I in center) and displaying your name, birthdate etc.
