AirPods Pro: Can't start hearing test "Place AirPods Pro in Case" popup

iPhone 16 Pro

iOS 18.1 (final release after public betas)

AirPods Pro gen 2 (lightning) Firmware 7B19

  1. AirPods in ears
  2. Settings -> AirPods Pro->Take A Hearing Test
  3. Popup appears saying "Place AirPods Pro in Case" (See screenshot for full wording)
  4. Putting them back in case for a prolonged period, including both phone and case on charger, does not allow the Hearing Test to proceed.
  5. I can use the Hearing Aid mode by loading an older manually entered Audiogram. But I wanted to try the hearing test to see if it has changed since the audiogram is 3 years old.

There is no mention anywhere online about this. The phone has been restarted multiple times.

What gives?

Had all the same problems mentioned. The fix was NOT taking the pods out of the case. Open the case (leave pods in case), wait for phone to connect, open the AirPod section in Settings and press the Hearing Test tab. Should bring up the questionnaire. After that it will prompt you to take out the pods and place them in ears to start the test process.

I still have the exact same problem. I can’t get passed the diagnostic test part. I am constantly asked to put the AirPods back in the case for a few minutes but nothing changes. It worked for one night several weeks ago and I was able to do a hearing test but at the end I was told there was too much background noise, despite the fact I was sat in a quiet room on my own. The second test said the same. I gave up and tried the next day to be greeted by the message saying a diagnostic test needed to be done again so I’m back to square one. The hearing aid feature was one of the main reasons I bought the AirPods so it’s a kick in the teeth. I contacted Apple Support who said it was a hardware issue and to book an appointment at a store but if it’s a problem for everyone, I would have thought it would be a software issue
