M1 iPad Pro 5th Gen not charging and stuck on charge screen after iOS 18.1 update

My 5th-gen iPad M1 has suddenly stopped responding. It won’t charge or respond to any of the suggested fixes, including force reboot and recovery mode. It was working perfectly until the battery drained completely. I managed to boot it once, connected the charger, and assumed it was charging, but when I checked again, it was dead. Now, it’s stuck on the charging screen (see image). Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a solution?

Unfortunately, mine is fully dead now, there is no battery power. With the iOS update the battery wasn't charging and now it's fully drained to the point I am unable to hard reset or go to any boot modes. I tried what you suggested so far but it's not getting detected by my Mac or even a PC. It was functioning flawlessly and with a simple software update, it turned into a prop. Please do suggest anything I can do to revive this.

What's funny is that when I spoke to Apple support after multiple meetings with folks in the Apple store, they simply said software cannot damage the hardware! I have even emailed Apple but no response. All I want is a fix to this M1.

So after a few follow-ups with customer support, 2 visits to the Apple store, and having my devices checked by technicians, it was official that my M1 iPad Pro was bricked. After seeing a few more similar cases online in various forums, including this community, about other Apple silicon iPads having had the same issue, it became apparent that it is due to the iOS 18.1 update. Sadly, as I am out of warranty and have no Apple Care, I didn't get any further support, but an offer to replace the device for nearly half the price of buying the latest one. It's disappointing to see this happening with an Apple device, and when my usage was not the cause. I understand it's only the case for a few, I wish there was a fix for this and it's sad to see how a perfectly good piece of hardware is now having to go to waste. I do have the option of giving it back to Apple for free to recycle.

Never have I experienced this with Apple before on the device side of things.

What's shocking was when a specialist I connected over the phone was unaware that sometimes that software can cause hardware failure.

Thought I would share this update for anyone else having a similar issue. I love this ecosystem and I hope they will fix this issue moving forward and choose to support people when the software is clearly at fault.

Instead of attempting to charge your iPad using a USB-C Power Adapter, try charging your iPad using a USB Type-A Power Adapter - rated at 12W (i.e. 2.4A @5V) or greater. You will obviously require a USB Type-A to USB-C charging cable.

You may find that (a) your iPad will successfully charge - and (b) may also find that your iPad may now again be successfully charged using a USB-C Power Adapter.

Hi sureshpathirana8, I had the same issue when I updated to 18.1 and my M1 has been bricked for the past 3 weeks until now… I purchased Tenoshare’s iOS System Repair and followed their instructions. It installed 18.3 but that didn’t help, so I decided to try to revert to 17. I downloaded iPadOS 17.7 from ipswbeta.dev and was able to roll back the firmware using the standard repair option. My ipad just now powered up and is currently recovering data.

If you have already sought help from Apple and received a diagnosis - and charging with a standard USB Type-A Power Adapter doesn't help - then you have likely reached the end of the road. Your iPad will require repair/replacement.

You can establish eligibility and cost of a repair in your country/region here:

iPad Repair & Service - Apple Support

For practical purposes, in lieu of servicing and returning your own iPad, Apple usually exchange the iPad for a renewed/refurbished iPad of the same model and specification. The cost of the exchange is the same as would otherwise be charged for the repair.

If you have an active AppleCare+ plan, the cost of repair is reduced to a small excess/deductible fee.

I'm glad to hear your device managed to survive. I am past the point of any recovery, now I don't even see the battery recharge sign. It's tragic to see this device just died from an OS update. Till the next update is rolled out, my recommendation is to ensure you have a charge of at least 40% and ensure you charge it from there. Don't take the risk of draining your batter fully.

Sorry to hear that, I got myself an expensive paperweight - iPad Pro, the magic keyboard, and pencil sitting on my desk. I have tried reaching out to Apple support and even wrote to them but sadly we are less than 1% of devices that have been affected by this. We have no choice but to save up and buy a new one. If you manage to somehow get it charging I guess the new update probably fixed it, and ensure to keep the charge above 40%.

Mine was also completely dead—Apple certified center said they couldn’t help. Try connecting yours to a Mac or PC with iTunes and doing a hard reset or put in DFU mode. That’s when I noticed that mine wasn’t really dead. My Mac mini recognized it and tried to restore, but failed. That’s when I tried the same with the software and it worked. Since recovery, I’ve noticed that my iPad powers down when it is attached to the Magic Keyboard and I close the lid, so there’s def something wrong with the firmware. It’s a shame that Apple isn’t doing anything to help.

Try these tips from YouTube… my iPad’s screen was completely black, but it actually responded to tapping the screen pretty hard like in the first link. It started showing it needed to be charged, but wouldn’t accept a charger until I installed the fw.
