How do I connect my COROS HRM to my Apple Watch Ultra 2?

I run with an Apple Ultra 2, and want my watch to pull heart rate data from a COROS HRM. I don't run with a phone, so trying to just use watch. Having trouble getting it to work. I can sync the HRM with my watch and is shows connected. But I dont think the watch is using the heart rate data from the Coros when I run. Anyone else use external device for HR?

If I turn off HR in my watch settings, I get no HR readings at all. Does turning off HR for my watch prevent it from reading from external devices such as the Coros HRM, or does it just prevent the watch's own HR data?

Thanks!!!

It must be possible:

If you’re not able to get a consistent reading because of any of these factors, you can connect your Apple Watch wirelessly to external heart rate monitors such as Bluetooth chest straps. Learn how to pair Bluetooth accessories.

Turning off heart rate will also turn of the external monitor as you're saying to your watch: "you're not allowed to do anything with my heart rate"
