A website I'v used for years in now asking that I use an authenticator app to be able to login to their website.
It tells me to go to the Mac App Store and install one of the authenticator apps.
This worries me, in online reviews many of these apps have been accused of poor security due to "security incidents"
How do I install a reliable secure app?

You can actually use the authentication functionality built-in the Passwords application. Open the Passwords application, select the website, click on Set Up Verification Code and follow the instructions on the screen.
If you use a password manager (1Password, LastPass, etc), they almost always support MFA and allow you to generate the one-time passwords, so they can be the authenticators.
Microsoft and Google both have authenticators.
Twilio Authy has been around for a long time and is generally well-regarded, makes "best authenticator for 20XX" lists, and so on.
It's not like there's a lack of choice or a lack of reviews.

I have tried following your suggestion, however there is no application on my Mac called Passwords.
I'm sorry, I thought you had installed macOS Sequoia. Which version of macOS are you using? Also do you have an iPhone or iPad and, if so, which version of iOS / iPadOS are they using?
