password to unlock ssd drive not recognized

I have Time machine on a Samsung ssd. When I updated to iMac M4, I tried initializing the SSD and Time Machine seemed to accept the drive. Now a message asks me for the password to unlock the disk, but the one I have does not work. Do I need to discard the disk and start with a new one? The disk in question is connected to one of the four Thunderbolt connections on the iMac. Of course the Mac OS is Sequoia.

iMac 24″, macOS 15.1

If you do not have the password to unlock the drive, then the best you can do is erase and reformat the drive with Disk Utility. You can then start a new backup set with Time Machine.
