MacBook crashes if I move it to a different location.

Hi,

Problem.

My MacBook (Mid 2014 SSD) crashes if I move it to a different location (Try to use it as a laptop with no peripherals attached).

The MacBook usually resides in my office (99.9% of the time), on top of some A4 paper draws with a USB hub attached and a monitor attached via HDMI.

It has worked for 5 years in this position, and will always work in this position with peripherals attached.

However, if I try to use it anywhere else it crashes. On my lap on the sofa, in bed (any position), or even flat on any table, it crashes.

The screen will go blank (still backlit) after 30secs-2mins of use, then after another 30secs of the blank screen it turns off. I reboot but the same thing happens again, stuck in a circle.

If I put it back in my office with the USB hub and HDMI monitor connected it works fine again.

One Exception: If i take it down stairs and put the MacBook on a stand (at 30degrees) to use with my decks, and plug a USB mixer (Serato) into the same USB socket I use in my office, it works fine. (No HDMI attached).

Note: The USB port in question is the back righthand side (HDMI in front of it), and the USB cable in both situations (office and decks), hangs down from the MacBook and obviously causes a small amount of weight/pressure pulling down on the USB socket.

I know this seems stupid, and this pattern of using the USB port may be a red herring, but it’s the only thing thats common in the two scenarios where it doesn’t crash.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

**I know its an old MacBook and I am well overdue an upgrade (it’s on the cards).**

Thank you in advance.

Sound like a RAM issue if mid 2012 or older(?)— 2014 RAM is soldered direct to the logic board

if there is cracked solder anywhere ( your USB connection)

or a trace fault in a cable can also cause your issue.

I would not throw any money at a 2014 MBP
