Why do my texts keep switching between RCS and SMS on iPhone?

I’m trying to talk to someone over text who has an android, but every text i send is being sent as SMS and all of theirs are being sent as RCS. It keeps flipping back and forth and it’s annoying.

This finally worked for me!

“You are going to want to turn off RCS in your Messages settings, then turn on Airplane mode. After that, restart your phone. Then go back in, enable the RCS setting and THEN turn off Airplane mode and it should work.

This is assuming you have the bug where your contact’s messages come through as RCS, but yours still come through as SMS. And make sure they are the one who sent the most recent message, so the latest chat came through as RCS.

If you’re not already receiving as RCS, I don’t know if this will work. Apple pls fix”

***!!! This is the only thing that worked for me! I reset network settings, restarted, turned off iMessage, SMS and did everything else suggested in this thread and finally the airplane mode with RCS disabled restart worked for me. THANK YOU!

Why keep green ( text message rcs ) for what what is mean annoying for me

Your post makes little sense in English.

RCS is the replacement for SMS and MMS, and you will get messages using RCS if your carrier and the devices of the users you are contacting support it.

If that is not what you meant please see→How to write an effective Apple Support Communities post

Both my wife and I have turned it off on our iphones but there is no way to turn it off on her ipad

but still, others who group text are using RCS and/or haven't updated to the latest iOS and that is their right to do so

as long as they exist on the group the issues persist

And no I am not blocking my family or telling them to turn it off

Apple should make RCS work regardless of the situation

RCS is just poorly implemented and causes a lot of problems

Aug 13, 2025 11:08 AM in response to IdrisSeabright

obviously whomever is responding has no idea of the problem

our entire group has iphones, there is no need for RCS to be used on a group with all iphones

but when someone is unable to send using imessage, which none of us are privy to why it randomly sends messages using RCS

Apple is choosing to send using RCS when all the phones are iphones

Apple should not be sending RCS to apple phones

I only know what you tell me about the problem. You've never really explained what the problem is with RCS other than you don't like it and think Apple shouldn't use it.

our entire group has iphones, there is no need for RCS to be used on a group with all iphones

Having iPhones is not the same thing as using iMessage. There are lots of people with iPhones who don't use iMessage. And that's their choice.

but when someone is unable to send using imessage, which none of us are privy to why it randomly sends messages using RCS

In order to be able to send an iMessage, you have to have an active data connection, either WiFi or cellular. If you don't or it's very weak, the message can get sent as an RCS (if you have that feature enabled) or and SMS (if you don't).

But you know what? You can set your phone so that if it can't send as an iMessage, the message will simply fail and not be sent. I don't think it's an improvement but I'm not you.

Settings>Apps>Message>Send as Text Message>Off

Apple is choosing to send using RCS when all the phones are iphones

No, the user is choosing it by 1) having RCS enabled on their phone and 2) having Send as Text Message enabled.

Apple should not be sending RCS to apple phones

Apple is not sending RCS messages. Your friends and family are. Apple has made RCS available to those who want to use it (and whose carriers support it).

I know that you are not going to take any of the suggestions I've given that will resolve most, if not all, of your issues. I know that you just want Apple to accede to your demands. Guess what? That's not going to happen. Millions of people begged Apple to add RCS capabilities for years. You're in a very tiny minority.

Take the suggestions I've given, give Apple feedback, continue to complain and demand to no purpose, it's all up to you.
