I’m trying to talk to someone over text who has an android, but every text i send is being sent as SMS and all of theirs are being sent as RCS. It keeps flipping back and forth and it’s annoying.

This finally worked for me!
“You are going to want to turn off RCS in your Messages settings, then turn on Airplane mode. After that, restart your phone. Then go back in, enable the RCS setting and THEN turn off Airplane mode and it should work.
This is assuming you have the bug where your contact’s messages come through as RCS, but yours still come through as SMS. And make sure they are the one who sent the most recent message, so the latest chat came through as RCS.
If you’re not already receiving as RCS, I don’t know if this will work. Apple pls fix”
***!!! This is the only thing that worked for me! I reset network settings, restarted, turned off iMessage, SMS and did everything else suggested in this thread and finally the airplane mode with RCS disabled restart worked for me. THANK YOU!

Can confirm this temporarily fixes the issue with some contacts but not all. And it never lasts once my network changes from WiFi to cellular or I move between towers.
This worked!! Same issue and this corrected the sms back to rcs immediately!

The label has nothing to do with anything. It's there simply for the convenience of your human eyes. You could name a label "Rutabaga" and it wouldn't change anything.
Correlation is not always causality.....
But if it appears to work for you, there's certainly no harm in it.

What is awful about it? What problems are you having?
Why don't you just turn it off on your phone? Settings>Apps>Messages>RCS Messaging. Turn both options off. Problem solved.

Like just about every large company Apple has both formal technical support and an area where users can discuss technical issues with other users. And, like all of those other companies, Apple does not participate in any significant way in the user-to-user discussions, as that might inhibit the free flow of ideas. The formal name of this area is Apple Support Communities. The “Communities” should be a giveaway that this isn’t a formal support site. About the only communications methods not used by Apple support is inbound email or text, probably because the volume would be overwhelming, and separating the wheat from the chaff (or, to us engineers, a poor signal to noise ratio) would be almost impossible.
And yet, I don't suggest the initial label, of "phone", the device does during initial save.
It's also not selectable again, because it isn't in the list at all, after.
This is a vCard standard formatting issue.
As soon as I change the label to one that exists from the list, either while storing the contact initially or once RCS breaks, it immediately restores RCS.
For the two contacts this had been happening the moment I picked a label that actually existed in the list, RCS worked. When I deleted then re-added the contact with the default "phone" labels, RCS broke.
Not here to argue, sharing what worked and reliably. What's your suggestion?
