How to Change AirTag Name

Using iOS 18.2. Done is greyed out IF Custom Name is selected! Done is active if the originally selected name is still shown in the list, allowing the new name to be typed in! In other words, if you SELECT ‘Custom Name’ you can’t change to a custom name. If you don’t change to ‘Custom Name’ you can.

Just verified with my iPhone SE 3, running iOS 18.2:

To change the AirTag's name:

  • Tap on the Find My app to open it.
  • Tap on the Items tab.
  • Tap on the tag you want to rename.
  • Scroll down to the bottom, and then, tap on Rename Item.
  • If you don't want to use any of the existing choices, choose Custom Name.
  • Enter the desired name.

If that doesn't work, try selecting one of provided names first and verify that it is renamed to that choice. Once verified, try Custom Name again.

I found a workaround if you have fast fingers: Select one of the standard items and enter the desired name for your custom item. Next, use the control to select Custom Name. Then, as you lift your finger off of Custom Name quickly tap the Done button before it is deactivated. You may need to select one of the standard names such that your finger is very close to the Done button when you lift it off of the Custom Name item. Or else just use a different finger to immediately tap Done when you lift the other finger from Custom Name.
