Mail practically unusable after 18.2 - is it possible to revert update?

The iOS 18.2 update has now caused me to miss several important emails. The extra steps needed to find messages is a disaster. I have used Apple Mail for many years but for the first time I am now looking for an alternative.

Is it possible to configure Apple Mail to not use the categories introduced in 18.2 or alternatively to roll back the update so that I can have a usable mail app again.

EDITED to ADD

Thanks to Macrumors I have found that you can indeed turn off the Category view by tapping on the three dots in top right and selecting List View. It is a bit of a nuisance as doing it in All mail does not apply to all accounts and you have to apply the change individually to all accounts in your app.

A thought for Apple to ponder - just because you can do something, does not mean you should!

Oh, that’s all? Those are option settings:

To remove the icons in the list view:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap Apps
  • Tap Mail
  • Turn off Show Contact Photos
  • Optionally, turn off Summarize Message Previews

To turn off Categories:

  • Open the Mail app
  • Tap on an inbox
  • Tap on ⋯⃝ in the upper right
  • Tap to check List View

These 2 steps will return the Mail app to the way it previously worked.

Nobody here has to be mad. Nobody has to feel put out. Apple has tried something new, and for all those of us who don't like it, there are lots of folks who haven't written in to this forum who do like it.

So, how to deal with it positively?

Lawrence Finch in this thread has pointed out exactly how to change the settings so you can go back to the old style Mail. That works fine. Thank you very much Lawrence Finch!!

There are all kinds of other tutorials out there to give even more info, even Youtube videos like this kinda weird one:

Don't everyone just freak out and complain. If I can fix it, you can fix it.

No return, no. Not at all. After using categories and looking at the All Mail section where 150 mails were found, I disabled the categories and was left with the same 150 mails in my inbox. The point is that before experimenting categories I had left only 9 messages in my inbox after archiving a lot of them manually. Now it seem everything is back... Thank you Apple. This is on top of a macOS becoming more buggy at every update.

Not sure if this is relevant to your problems, but I think it fixed mine!

Thanks must go to Lammiwinks for this solution.

After upgrading to 8.2 and then to 8.2.1 and still seeing my email never come, I did a lot of searching for some sort of solution before totally wiping my ipad and restarting it. It turned out that it was a combination of the 8.2 upgrade along with my use of a PiHole ad blocking server. On the Pihole I had to whitelist two Apple domains.

The domains were mask.icloud.com and mask-h2.icloud.com.

Lammiwinks explains it better than I can in the following thread:

Mail cannot function in IOS 18.2 if iClou… - Apple Community

Hope this helps somebody else and maybe get Apple to fix this properly.

Thank you for the information. Yes, the update to iOS has rendered the mail app hot garbage. I'm glad I know how to turn on list view, but THAT should be the default.

When Apple adds a feature they frequently enable it be default, because if they didn’t the 99% of users who never read release notes (such as all of those who posted in this thread) wouldn’t know the feature existed. When you update there is a link to release notes like this one→What’s new in iOS 18 - Apple Support, which clearly describes new features and how to disable or modify them. I suggest that when the next update comes out you might consider spending a few minutes to read the changes included in the release. And there will be some significant changes.

Its awful. Even in “list view” the icons take so much space that you cannot easily peruse your mail. Too time consuming. I dont even bother looking at email on my phone anymore. Might as well delete the app and go through icloud on the browser.

Why don’t you disable the icons, as explained many time in this thread?

Going one step beyond your answer, I had found that the categories did not accurately assign emails. But I could not find (yet) a way to simply correct that. I can see that this could be a useful feature. But not in the present form....

I agree that the categorization needs to be fixed. Please let Apple know, the best place to suggest something to Apple is here→Product Feedback - Apple

I have reverted back to the original list view and as you mentioned elsewhere it has to be done for each individual email account if you have more than one. However, not explained is the missing emails before and after reverting back. I also have outlook express and that’s how I found they were missing or why apple automatically inflicted this on everyone rather than maintaining the default and giving the option to change the email if wanted after others had done the B testing.

There are several possible scenarios.

The first is Do Not Disturb (DND). Make sure it is off; on each device, open the Control Center by dragging down from the Battery icon. Look for the DND button; it will have a crescent moon, and make sure it is off (not highlighted).

Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics and make sure all options have a tone assigned to them.

Go to Settings/Notifications and tap on the entry for each app you want to receive notifications from; make sure it is on, and that is has a sound enabled and assigned.

Let us know if any of this helps.

I’ve used iPad(s) for many years to access my email. My email uses a Zimbra Exchange Server, pushing my mail out to my iPad. I recently upgraded to IOS 18.2 and since then, email messages have been very slow to arrive. This is on an iPad Mini 6. I also still use my iPad Mini 3 running IOS 12.5.7 and the mail arrives on this old machine almost instantaneously, but nothing shows up on my Mini 6 for anywhere between 5 minutes to 2 hours later.

How do I roll back this Mini 6 to the previous version.

By the way, my wife has an iPad Air 6 running IOS 18.1.1 and getting her email from the same server and having absolutely no problems.

Please fix this or tell me how to roll back my version of IOS.

Thanks.
