Mail practically unusable after 18.2 - is it possible to revert update?

The iOS 18.2 update has now caused me to miss several important emails. The extra steps needed to find messages is a disaster. I have used Apple Mail for many years but for the first time I am now looking for an alternative.

Is it possible to configure Apple Mail to not use the categories introduced in 18.2 or alternatively to roll back the update so that I can have a usable mail app again.

EDITED to ADD

Thanks to Macrumors I have found that you can indeed turn off the Category view by tapping on the three dots in top right and selecting List View. It is a bit of a nuisance as doing it in All mail does not apply to all accounts and you have to apply the change individually to all accounts in your app.

A thought for Apple to ponder - just because you can do something, does not mean you should!

Oh, that’s all? Those are option settings:

To remove the icons in the list view:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap Apps
  • Tap Mail
  • Turn off Show Contact Photos
  • Optionally, turn off Summarize Message Previews

To turn off Categories:

  • Open the Mail app
  • Tap on an inbox
  • Tap on ⋯⃝ in the upper right
  • Tap to check List View

These 2 steps will return the Mail app to the way it previously worked.

I didn’t realize my mail had been categorized differently until I was anxiously awaiting medical results. Turned off categories and I discovered 29 important messages I’ve needed to reply to! And not one notification for them because they were categorized wrongly as social/ subscriptions. Medical results as social or subscriptions!

I want my emails in order of receipt. Always. Read, unread, doesn’t matter. In one inbox. I may have to switch to my Google account after having this Mac account for 26 years. I can’t use it if it doesn’t work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for the clear steps. Yours is an example of contribution to the community, not complaining, just a simple shift back to the existing set up.

Going one step beyond your answer, I had found that the categories did not accurately assign emails. But I could not find (yet) a way to simply correct that. I can see that this could be a useful feature. But not in the present form....

Agree with practically everything on this thread. The categories seem random. Emails are not correctly categorized. But this new version seems very buggy as well. Emails I’ve deleted on the web still appear in my inbox in Apple Mail on iOS. When I delete or archive a message on iOS, it immediately and mysteriously reappears. Messages older than a couple days don’t appear at all. I’ve been a user of Apple Mail since the first iPhone but this version broke me. Need to use another mail app unless they fix these bugs and usability issues.

Just adding to the chorus of how horrible this update is. I missed some important emails for my business because of whatever this app decided to not show me. Honestly, it is so unintuitive that I have since gone back to using my PC desktop to see what things I’m missing.

thanks for the update including how to make it back to the original version- I do still think I am missing some emails though.

Being level 10 I hope you can help me with my problem:

since ipados18 and ios18 were introduced, now I am up to 18.3.1:

i have iPad 7th gen. Which is used for mail only since it is wi-fi only and I have iPhone 15 which is used for text messaging only, no mail. With 18 and my notifications assignments, on the iPad I only receive drop downs and the number count no alert sounds, which I greatly rely on because I am not on my devices 24/7 even though I am retired. So, I need the alert sounds. As to my iPhone, after 18, I am also not receiving any of the notifications, sounds, banners/ etc. that a text message is there which is alarming since some of those will have to do with 2-step verifications, etc. Except, every now and then an alert sound from my bank will come through. That is all. Before 18, I was receiving all notification types I assigned to an app. For both devices.

i do not use Focus nor screen time.

can you please help me with this issue.

Thought you read your email and lost a job, spouse, kid? The lack of foresight is very worrying for someone who has benefited from buying into the Apple ecosystem, like getting reliable email to iPhone, etc. The week or two it took to figure out I was no longer receiving email on my phone made me appear unprofessional, unresponsive, aloof or disrespectful. I am still angry and if you were hurt by the break it fast kids who have the categoricalizable life this innovation was designed for but no insight into how everyone else on the planet lives, I encourage you to express your frustration or it will keep happening. After you fix your settings and catch up on your email, that is!

It’s awful - my inbox currently shows 7 unread messages, but when I open it, there aren’t any unread. The dedicated unread folder doesn’t show any unread. I’ve lost any emails that I’ve flagged in the last four months! The reason for flagging emails is because they’re important and I want to be able to find them quickly, and now they’ve disappeared! Great work apple….

It doesn’t help the problem of missing emails. Having to constantly use the search function to find emails received and read only a few days before is no use. Why can’t you admit there is a problem?

I’m a user like you. I don’t have a problem, and I have seen very few posts about your specific issue. The focus has been on the UI change, not missing emails, so that is most likely an issue specific to you. Have you changed the settings as recommended in this thread to switch back to list view?

When there are things working correctly and everything is running smoothly, Apple thinks “hey let’s mix things up!” This is ongoing with every single update (that are also ongoing and ongoing and ongoing). Before you install a new update it always says it’s a security feature. Well, there is no way I believe this new change to our email has anything to do with security. It has to do with Apple wanting to use this new ridiculous AI.

i hate to bring up a possible sour subject but when Steve Jobs was alive the only time there were updates were when updates were actually needed.

Im so fed up with Apple!!!!

The update to the email section is a nightmare! It’s not user friendly and has caused me to continue to mess several emails! They need to switch it back and forget it ever happened!

You just added to a 7 page thread where how to revert to the way Mail worked in the previous version has been posted around 100 times. Sometimes it pays to read a thread before adding to it.
