Unable to add locations on my AirTag

I got an AirTag and I put it in my backpack. I frequently leave it at home and each time I get a notification “the item is left behind”. I trying adding a “notify me, except at” location but each time I get “unable to add location. There was an error adding this location”. What can I do about it?

I'm assuming that you reside in a country that does not restrict the use of the Apple Find My network.

As such, see if any of the following can help:

  • I would start by double-checking that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS. BTW, you didn't mention what iPhone model you currently have when you get these notifications. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • You also want to be sure that your AirTag's firmware is up to date: AirTags update automatically when connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth. Ensure it’s nearby and connected to the Find My app.
  • Verify that Location Services is enabled on your phone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Scroll down to Find My and set it to While Using the App and enable Precise Location (if your iPhone supports it).
  • Try resetting the AirTag.
  • If not already, enable Significant Locations on your iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Significant Locations. Restart your iPhone, then try adding the location again.
  • Finally, be sure to set your home location using the Maps app on your iPhone.

you can't really do anything

the way airtags works is that their only means of communication is Bluetooth so they are dead in the water if further away from an iPhone with an internet connection and Bluetooth enabled.

the Bluetooth range is around 30 meters so if no other iPhone users are around all your phone knows is that it's left behind.
