why is my airpods external speaker so much louder than the internal one?

Hello My AirPods are almost Brand new and Ive cleaned them multiple times. Recently Ive realised that people across the room can hear what i’m listening to while I’m at regular volume. Is there any way I can make the external speaker quieter?
