AirPods Pro Gen 2 firmware update

I have read that in order to update the firmware I simply charge the AirPods and leave them in bluetooth range of my phone, then viola, the update will occur.

This doesn't seem to be the case. Firstly I can put the AirPods on charge (in their case) and connect to the phone (by opening the case) but with no activity the connection times out after a short period and no update takes place.

I see a few are experiencing the same issue, how do I proceed? I'm currently running firmware: 7A305, but according to Apple, the current latest version is: 7B21

I've had these for over a week so plenty of time to have performed the update, am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks

Why are you opening the case and leaving it open?

the firmware update takes place automatically, with the AirPods in the closed case.

What has worked for me:

Connect your phone to WiFi.

Connect it to a charger.

connect the AirPods case to a charger.

Take the AirPods out of the case, connect them to the phone.

play a song or video.

put the AirPods back in the case, close it.

put them close to each and leave.

Go make coffee and gaze out the window contemplating how big the universe is and how small humanity is, take a walk around the block enjoying the sun.

After something like 20 minutes the update should happen.
