For years I have added small mp3 files to iTunes. I use these for musical ear training. Last time I did this was in 2024. Just now however, adding these mp3 files doesn't seem to be working. I have seen several threads on mp3 import issues, but nothing that seems to help me accomplish what I want. Can someone help me out? Has something changed? I believe these are fairly vanilla mp3 files.

What app is being used to record/generate the files? If you drop one in the Automatically Add to iTunes folder inside your media folder is it moved into a Not Added folder. Assuming so that tells you iTunes really doesn't like something about the format, although not what. A potential problem is when the file extension doesn't agree with the internal format of the file.

It's mostly a python tool chain I created years ago. The tool which creates the file is actually called 'lame', which is a tool for generating mp3 from wav files. I do then add some tags to the mp3 files using another python script (basically lyrics, which provide answers to the ear training question). Anyhow, there really can't be a copyright issue here.
I followed your advice and dropped the file into 'Automa...' and it disappeared. I don't see a 'Not added' folder anywhere or my mp3 file! Help!
It isn't a copyright issue. I suspect LAME isn't producing a valid .mp3 file for reasons. Try opening the output files in something like https://www.audacityteam.org/ and see if it makes sense of the tracks. Audacity should be able to export valid MP3s. It too requires the LAME encoder, but it might be sending the right commands to it whereas your existing workflow is broken somehow.

I have an idea what is going on. The files I am adding are just renamed versions of files that are already in the library. I was trying to come up with a subset of smaller files. I was thinking I could just copy smaller files and rename them. Let me run with that idea.
How short are these files you are trying to add? There is likely an undocumented minimum length that iTunes wants to work with. Are you using standard 16bit/44KHz stereo sampling? Again, non-standard but perfectly valid alternatives might be rejected out of hand.

I had Audacity installed (version 2.0.5), so I used that to open the file dropped. No problem. It plays it okay. Is that enough of a test?

Another question is: what happened to the file? It disappeared (after 30 sec or so) from 'Automatically Add..'? Seems I should either find the file or a 'Not Added' folder.
Does it have the hidden flag attached to it? These are unceremoniously deleted.

I'm going to assume that my idea is correct. I going to sort the files in iTunes by 'Time' and create playlists of shorter file that way. Thanks.
