Apple TV Up Next not updating

I see this has happened to a few users for different reasons, but the Apple TV has stopped updating Up Next and frankly I have no idea where to find any of my shows. It has been some time, so I have checked in settings for TV that it is set to play net video (it is), and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the various apps (paramount, Crave, Disney, etc - It never did show Netflix). I have checked that the iOS was up to day (it was). I am now resetting to factory settings and I will have to reinstall the apps. So 2 questions:

  1. Why would Up Next stop updating?
  2. When it does show a program, when i click on it and it asks "Connect X (e.g. Crave) to Apple TV?" Clicking connect just sets the wheel whorling forever. There is no info I can find that tells me how to connect an app to apple tv. They should all be connected. I mean I tend to subscribe through Apple TV, so...

Any help gratefully received. As someone before me said, it's the most useful thing about Apple TV so it needs to work!

Thank you!

Why would Up Next stop updating?

What “updating” do you expect to happen, in detail?

If a third party apps supports connecting, and is configured to connect to the Apple TV app, then Continue Watching would list shows and movies that you have started or added to the queue, and haven’t completed yet.

Additionally, the Apple TV app has a setting to process this data – or not. Settings﹥Apps﹥TV app﹥Use Play History﹥On|Off. This is a per-device setting. It is also filtering for available services on that device, e.g. it might be confusing if you watch sometimes on other devices with other settings and abilities.

The message is about ‘connecting’ select third party apps to the Apple TV app. It is not about the Apple TV device per se. Connected apps can have their content integrated through Continue Watching, etc.

App developers need to support this feature, if they choose to. (Netflix chose not to.) It also differs by country. Availability of supported apps in the Apple TV app - Apple Support. This applies to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV box. Not Mac, not PC, not smart TVs, not third party streaming devices with the Apple TV app — those are filtering for and limited to services available in their app edition (e.g. Apple TV+, and/or iTunes Store movies, and/or in-app channels).

Not sure what could cause a supported app to not succeed in connecting. When doing so, the system would try to retrieve some online metadata that applies to that service, and adjust your iCloud settings for this configuration. I haven’t seen that fail before.
