Why did Apple delete a lot of my songs on my iPhone after this last update?

Apple doesn't delete your songs. You can always sync again from your library

I know I can re-sync but my question is why were most of my songs deleted after the last update? It's just a pain to sync them and wastes time.
why were the songs deleted?
I would imagine some form of crash corrupted the music database on the device, causing a reset. Over 18 years of iPod/iPhone use it has happened to me twice.
