Will the 40mm watch band safely fit 42mm Apple Watch?

I have multiple bands for my 40mm Apple watch, I would like to replace this watch with an Apple watch 10, but the smallest is 42mm. Will the 40mm bands safely fit and hold on the 42mm watch?
