In Motion, how can I remove the flashing/blinking effect from a File Generator?

My File Generator text flashes on and off between each line. I just want it to go from one line to the next with no black frames between my line text. So currently, my animation looks like this:

Frames 1-2: 1000.000

Frames 3-4:

Frames 5-6: 1000.001

Frames 7-8:

etc

I want the following:

Frames 1-2: 1000.000

Frames 3-4: 1000.001

Frames 5-6: 1000.002

Frames 7-8: 1000.005

etc

I would also like my animation to happen at a set frame rate. To me, this is more important than displaying all of the lines of text. So, if I extend my generator out in Final Cut Pro's project timeline, I want to display more of my text. For example, if my generator is 8 frames long, it will display animation frames 1-8. If I stretch my generator to 16 frames long, instead of stretching animation frame 1-8 or looping frames 1-8, I want it to show frames 1-16.

Where does the text come from?

I tried a few text files, and the only way that I could get the text to "flash", as you describe, is if there are empty lines in the text.

The standard text format in the Mac uses a newline character at the end of each line. Windows uses a pair carriage return newline, maybe the text file came from windows and this results in the file being treated as if there is an empty line after every text line?

Update - That is exactly it, apparently. I created a test file using CRLF and it shows with these empty lines in Motion.

The thing with copying and pasting text like this is that the line ending characters may change.

I copied the text from your post to a text file and, as expected, it does NOT cause black frames - but that does not mean that your original text file would not have them.

Try a simple test: copy the numbers from your post above; open TextEdit, and a new document, and paste. Make sure that it is set to plain text and not rich text, and save.

Then test this file in Motion. Any black frames? I'm not expecting any.

I can tell you how you can achieve the last part of your desiderata in FCP.

There is, AFAIK, no way to program your generator so that it works in this way; but you just put the generator, with the appropriate duration, inside a compound clip, and then trim the compound in the project timeline.

For example, if your generator is 16 frames long, make it that long in FCP; press Option-G to make it a compound; then trim the compound to last the 8 frames you want.

Thanks for responding. I'm using a plain-text ".txt" file with one word or number on each line. Specifically, here's a cut/paste from my file:

0.00

0.76

1.31

1.65

1.99

2.69

4.28

8.16

10.94

13.74

15.71

16.67

The word or number from the first line in my txt file blinks on. Then it blinks off a few frames later. Then the next value blinks on and lasts a few frames, and then blinks back off for a frame or two.

How do I update it to have the right type of carriage return? I'm taking values from a single column in an Excel document, and pasting them into a txt file. The other odd thing is that it doesn't do it after every line - but appeasingly random and frequently - but always between lines - never in the middle of displaying a line. IOW, If it blinks off, the next time it blinks on, it's always the next line.

Awesome! That does appear to be the issue. I'm using plain text. But it still keeps the original carriage returns coded the same(?). The lines were cut/paste into a txt file from a Microsoft app. It apparently kept the carriage returns as you described. I did a find/replace in my txt file, and it appears to completely resolve the issue. :) Thanks so much. I've been working on troubleshooting this for hours and was searching for all kinds of other solutions that weren't working either.

Text editors like TextMate and BBEdit allow you to define which line endings to use, and also you can search and replace if needed. I use TextMate, and that is how I was able to test this issue. It is a free program.
