trash deleting right away

In the last day, when I put an unwanted file in the Trash either by dragging over or by the menu, it is getting deleted right away. I like to keep it in Trash for a day or two to make sure I no longer want or need it. As far as I can find, I never enabled this instant deletion. How can I keep in the Trash for a while? Enabling it to be deleted in 30 days has been done and doesn't change the immediate deletion.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Try shutting down your Mac and then restarting it from scratch. If you haven't done that in a long time, know that doing a full restart often clears up gremlins. If that doesn't solve the problem, let us know.

Until you discover the reason for the immediate deletion, consider creating a folder on your desktop that you might call "PreTrash" or something similar and move your unwanted files there. Then, when you are ready to actually delete them, move that folder to the Trash.
