How do I connect my MacBook to a Samsung monitor and work on both screens?

I would like to connect my mac connect to a larger monitor (Samsung Monitor) but be able to work on both screens. Currently I can move the screen but can only work on one of the screens? Would like to have my Mac lap top connected to a larger monitor and be able to work on both screens?
