MacOS 26.01 - Printing not working (Works on MacOS 26 and Windows)

Since upgrading to MacOS 26.1 from MacOS 26 my printer, a HP Laserjet Pro M428 MFD does not print. My spouse's Mac mini (M2) running MacOS 26 (not installed the 26.01 update yet) still prints just fine. Same for Windows systems. I have seen other threads and they seem to focus on this being a Tahoe MacOS 26 issue but for me, this only happened after installing MacOS 26.01.

My printer is a HP Laserjet Pro M428 FDW. I read in other threads that it's impacting many different printer models.

I desperately need to add the HP printer back and not have to do a restore of the OS back to MacOS26 which works.

Something in the MacOS26.1 update has broken something.

What I have done:

1) I deleted the printer on my MPB 16" M1 Pro but could not find it again to add back.

2) I installed the HP Software and it cannot find the printer plus it's a piece of crap.

3) As stated, I confirmed that Windows and other MacOS not upgraded can print just fine.

Other info:

The printer has an IP address that can be pinged or the embedded web interface brought up on a Windows 11 system just fine. On the MacOS 26.1 Mac mini, it can be pinged too.

I cannot ping the printer in terminal or bring up the embedded web interface on my MacBook Pro 16 M1.

MacOS 26 version Mac mini which has downloaded the new update but we are not restarting it. I wish I knew how to delete the scheduled install. I read a few posts saying look for an update file in the applications folder or in the Library folder but nothing existed. I did a CLI "software update blah blah) and the latest I see listed is MacOS 26. The article I was reading indicated that the software update CLI command would list the downloaded update.

This leads to another question, when the Software Update section of System Preferences shows Scheduled, Restart now or Install tonight. Does that mean the downloaded update has already been installed and only a restart is needed or will is download when I initiate the restart?

Tons of old and unvalidated information out there.

This is the first time and many years that I will turn off future updates and delay install until much later.

Does anyone know if Apple Engineers monitor this and respond or is it a black hole with just Apple customers helping each other?

Thanks,,,,,

In case this could help anyone.

I also had issues with 26.0.1 and 26.1.0 with my HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw. I noticed that I could print some documents and couldn't print others.

Today, I finally managed to print the document I needed to print, by installing Adobe Acrobat Reader and printing it from this app instead of from Preview.

Hi Mike,

I'm not sure if this is the same problem I was having, but the short version is that there seems to have been a change in 26.1 and in my case, the USB-A port on my hub, while working well with other accessories , doesn't have the capacity to work with the printer anymore. I was fortunate to be in touch with the Epson engineers and they recommended getting a small USB-C to USB-A adapter that plugs directly into the computer. I bought a small Anker adapter that is specifically for MacBooks and printers, and it works again.

Thanks for the info you sent, very grateful. It’s a Wi-Fi issue for me now. MacBook Pro works whilst older MacBook Pro and iMac do not. Booked Apple Support and they were useless saying its the printer not the OS, Well I disagreed but gone through everything I can. Direct connection via USB works but that means I cant print from our workstations.

Turned off auto update.

Merry Christmas

Mike
