Excel 'Save' and 'Save As' functions greyed out on MacBook Pro (M4)

I can not save an Excel spreadsheets on my MacBook Pro (M4). because there is no "Save" or "Save As" function available (greyed out)..

I can open and populate an excel file but I can not save that file because the "Save" and "Save As" functions are not highlighted.

Are you missing a license, perhaps? In other words, do you need to buy Microsoft 365 or – if you've already bought it – sign into your Microsoft account within Excel?
