Macbook slower and Touch ID not working after macOS 26 upgrade

If you are using 3 year or older MacBook, it is better not to upgrade to macOS 26 (Tahoe).

Noticed the following three issues after the upgrade

  • Slower mac and occasional hangs (even after a month) and I don't think indexing takes a month to complete
  • Touch ID started acting weird and finally stopped working. No rough use or water/oil contact.
  • Battery shows - need servicing all of a sudden.

If you have any solutions please let me know

It was not working at all. I tried deleting the registered fingerprint and adding it again, but it still wouldn’t read my fingerprint.

The fix was to boot into Safe Mode, check the fingerprint settings, and then run First Aid in Disk Utility.

Even though this resolved the issue, I faced the same problem again yesterday and followed the same steps, which fixed it again. If I remember correctly, my battery had completely drained, and after powering up, I started noticing the malfunctioning fingerprint reader.

All this started to happen after updating to Tahoe

  • Touch ID started acting up and eventually stopped working, even though there was no rough use or exposure to water or oil.
    • Shut down your Mac, then press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears. Check if Touch ID works afterward. If it does, restart your Mac once more.
  • The Mac has also been running slower and occasionally hangs, even after a month — and indexing shouldn’t take that long.
    • Open Disk Utility, select your HD/SSD, and run First Aid. Wait for the process to complete and see if it resolves any detected issues.
