Updates are not performed on demand through a push when they are released. Each device polls for updates in the background at times when the OS determines it is the most efficient and will be installed when it does not interfere with user activity and the device is locked and connected to power with a WiFi connection.
I would recommend to leave your device plugged in all night, every night with a wifi connection. No updates are performed when in Low Power mode. It is not unusual to open the App Store where it will poll for updates at that time or show updates that are waiting for the best time to install. You can manually do it then or simply wait and the OS will determine when to do it.
