I got Apple Vision Pro along with PSVR Sense Controllers from the Apple Store. I don't have neither the PSVR headset nor the PS5 itself.
What's the best way for me to check the controllers’ firmware version and update it if needed?

apple may not be in a position for them to make such a update, and I assume they do also not offer it for other third party product they sell in their online store
the only ones 100% sure to be able to access the newer firmware and have the protocol to apply it to sonys controllers would be sony, if they provided public access to their firmware files and access protocol to communicate with their controllers by usb, would mean apple would have to apply a amount of R&D resources to provide support to third-party hardware.
doubt they would, and I doubt sony would make it an open protocol third parties could access, because besides those with macs or linux boxes, there would be no demand/requirement for such access

or provide them with support to voice your view of them not taking a more active role in making software

I agree that Sony is responsible for the updates but since Apple convinced Sony to let them sell (only in Apple Store) controllers without headsets I believe they (Apple and Sony) had to come up with some procedure to support them otherwise it seems like the first product Apple allowed to sell in their stores with zero manufacturer support.

Yeah, there are multiple workarounds to do that. I have a PS5 but I can't connect them and update without having the VR headset so I can order it from Amazon and return after update, for example :D
But since Apple started selling controllers separately from PS VR headset I expected that there should be a way to update them without borrowing PCs or make fake purchases.
I'm sure the people who allowed sony controllers being sold on apples site, had no idea firmware updates were a thing, I would assume most thirdparty products they sell have no firmware to be updated and maintained.

if you don't come across any, then using the pc of a friend/relative/library computer access/or friendly employee in computer store, could perform the deed
