not enough memory on MacBook Air (8gb) to upgrade to Big Sur (needs 16gb?)

Big Sur update says it needs 16GB, my MacBook Air (2015) only has 8GB. How do I work around this? I can't access Safari at all from this device at the moment because it keeps trying to get this update.

It has nothing to do with memory. You'll probably don't have enough space on your internal drive. Try to free up storage space https://support.apple.com/en-euro/HT206996
