Big Sur update says it needs 16GB, my MacBook Air (2015) only has 8GB. How do I work around this? I can't access Safari at all from this device at the moment because it keeps trying to get this update.

No, you definitely need more storage available. I think about 35 GB
If you do have a large photo library e.g. , move it to an external drive https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201517
Don't forget to make a backup with TimeMachine on your external TM backup drive before updating
I have 18.5 GB of storage available, so that should work? It keeps timing out and not completing the upgrade....I've been trying for two days now, so I appreciate your help figuring this out!
