Updating MacBook to Big Sur

When updating my MacBook to Big Sur, I get a message indicating that I need more memory space while the computer has free memory space. What to do?

High Sierra to Big Sur upgrade Trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro from High Sierra to Big Sur. Have an early 2015 MacBook Pro (Retina) 10.13.6 which Apple says is eligible. About this Mac shows I have 40.98 GB available and only needs 35GB for the upgrade. Yet, when I go to upgrade it says not enough memory. Any thoughts on why?

Upgrade to MacOS Big Sur When I try to upgrade fo MacOS Big Sur, I get an error message that I need need more disk space. 16.7GB is a whole lot of disk space - which seems unreasonable for just an update. I just got this brand new MacBook Air in September and out of a 250GB hard drive, there is less than 10GB free. That seems weird too. I would love to hear some suggestions and insights. Thank you in advance!

RAM (memory) and Storage (disk) space are different limitations.

Which is it complaining about?

what Model MacBook Pro, and how much RAM and how much free storage?
