On my Desktop, why doesn't my Macintosh HD appear on my Desktop along with all of my External HDs and my Backup HD.

This use to not be the case. I use to click on the Desktop Macintosh HD Icon and used it as a shortcut but now I have to open a Finder Window to do this. What changed? I am including a Screen Shot of the comparison.

Start with this if IntelMac...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
