New M2 Air won't connect to captive portal

Let me start this conversation by saying that it looks like the question was asked but not sure there has been an actual answer to the problem that anyone has verified. That being said here is my scenario.

I frequent Starbucks (A Lot) and work from there several mornings a week. I have two Macs one is my work MacBook Pro that is the 16" Intel 6 core i7 and my personal Mac which is the new M2 MacBook Air. When I take my Air into Starbucks it will connect to the WiFi but will not launch the captive portal that they use. (I am not sure about any other captive portal elsewhere) I have to turn off the WiFi and restart my Air, log in and turn WiFi back on and connect to the SSID. At that point the portal comes up, I wait for it to gain the IP address and click "Done" and all is good until the next day when it all starts over again.

The i7 Work MacBook Pro always just works. Both of them are running the latest MacOS 12.6.

the M2 has done this since day 1. I have considered removing the WiFi interface and re-adding it to see if this resolves the problem but want to get some opinions first to see if anyone else has had this happen.

BTW please don't lecture me on using public WiFi I use a VPN on both of them.

Greetings erikbock,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We suggest performing a wireless diagnostics test on that MacBook Air to isolate the potential cause of this issue. This and further troubleshooting can be foind in the Apple Support article: If your Mac isn't connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi - Apple Support

"Use the built-in diagnostic tools

Wi-Fi Recommendations. Click Wi-Fi  in Control Center or the menu bar and check for a menu item named Wi-Fi Recommendations. If you see it, your Mac has detected an issue and has recommendations. Choose Wi-Fi Recommendations to learn more.*

Wireless Diagnostics. Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard while clicking Wi-Fi  in Control Center or the menu bar, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics from the menu. Learn more about using Wireless Diagnostics to analyze your wireless environment."

Let us know the outcome, and we can go from there if needed.

We look forward to hearing back from you.
