How to launch/open Captive Network Assistant app

I cannot get my MacBook Air (M1, Ventura) to open sign-in page for a captive network. Not a public freebie, Starbucks, but in a country where only internet goes through a single, subscription (for pay) network. To enter, must click on network, than get pop-up window to enter unique UN and PW. My new MBA will not open sign-in window, b/c it thinks and says, it is signed in.

Read here that to force sign-in window to open go to /System/Library/CoreServices and open Captive Network Assistant app. Found it, but doesn’t open. Read else to double click app. Doesn’t open.

How do I manually force sign-in window to open. Thanks for some help.

Hello, I had the same problem. Solved it by removing 8.8.8.8 from my DNS (Settings → WiFi → Details → DNS → 8.8.8.8 → –)

Hey there Armando,

While you may need to contact the network administrator for the captive network your'e trying to connect with, we'd like to rule out some possible causes:

  1. When did this first start to occur, and when was the last time you were you able to connect to a captive network?
  2. Any issues with connecting to a standard Wi-Fi network?
  3. Have you already quit Safari, cleared the history of it under Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data, then try again to connect to the captive network?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  5. Since you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.0.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

Understood, thanks! On your Mac, is Safari set to block pop ups? Or do you have any kind of extensions installed on Safari that block pop ups and/or ads? These can prevent the captive network window from appearing. Allow or block pop-ups in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

  1. In the Safari app  on your Mac, go to the website.
  2. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Websites.
  3. Click Pop-up Windows on the left.
  4. If you don’t see Pop-up Windows, be sure to scroll to the bottom of the list.
  5. In the pop-up menu for the website, choose one of the following:
    • Allow: Pop-ups for the website appear.
    • Block and Notify: Pop-ups for the website don’t appear, but when you visit a website with blocked pop-ups, you can choose to show them by clicking the Show button  in the Smart Search field.
    • Block: Pop-ups for the website don’t appear.

Thanks!

I found something that may explain my I can’t open the Captive Network Assistant app. I operates in background every time a Captive Network is detected to bring up Mac’s own sign-in page. Apparently mine isn’t doing it.

This what I found poste elsewhere in 2020:

To avoid such confusing situations to their users, Apple came up with a feature called Captive Network Assistant. This feature unnecessitates opening a browser and causes the device to automatically prompt the user to provide credentials using a pseudo browser.Aug 10, 2020

So, I don’t get the Captive Network’s sign-in page, nor the Apple one that Captive Network Assistant is suppose to bring up instead. Doesn’t explain 1) why computer thinks I am connected when not, or 2) why same problem existed before on my iphone, but the iOS system (although can’t find a captive network assistant on my iphone.

Not sure where this leaves me, except unable to connect for next 2 months except on Apple’s smallest phone, the iPhoneSE.

ArmandoWyo,

We’d like to have you work through some of the steps here, skipping the ones you’ve used already such as updating, which we understand you’re not able to complete without a connection - If your Mac isn't connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi

Check VPN or other security software

If you installed VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with your network connections, that software could be affecting access to the internet. Learn about network issues related to VPN and other software

Use the built-in diagnostic tools

Wi-Fi Recommendations. Click Wi-Fi in Control Center or the menu bar and check for a menu item named Wi-Fi Recommendations. If you see it, your Mac has detected an issue and has recommendations. Choose Wi-Fi Recommendations to learn more.*

Wireless Diagnostics. Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard while clicking Wi-Fi in Control Center or the menu bar, then choose Open Wireless Diagnostics from the menu. Learn more about using Wireless Diagnostics to analyze your wireless environment.

Thanks.

First, thank you very much for answering. I have had this problem for 6 years. We spend a few months here every winter, and I’ve struggled with internet connection. Through 3 Macs (MBA, MBP, and now MBA M-1). Posted many times and had one answer many years ago.

Problem originally was with both MacOS and iOS on iPhone, but about 4 years ago, iOS fixed it. On iPhone, I click on captive network, network sign-in page opens. I enter UN and PW. It remembers it and does it automatically thereafter.

Not on new MBAir. I click network, MBA shows connected and does nothing more. My VPN, mail connection doctor and Safari say, No Internet connection.

I used to have workarounds. Turning computer on-and-off was best. No more. Bookmarking network sign-in on Safari also worked at times. No more.

And this happens, on both public wifi sign-in spots and on our in-home wifi with own router.

I haven’t tried Clearing History on Safari. Will when home system is back up and report.

I have Ventura 13.0 but can’t upgrade w/o connection.

But what about Captive Network Assistant. Why doesn’t it open? Read elsewhere that it will force the sign-in page to open. Is there a trick to open app?

Something is different in the iOS and MacOS in how each responses to captive networks. Apple fixed one, but not the other. Or so it appears to this locked out Applephile.

Thanks. This was useful information. Didn’t know I had pop-ups blocked. Unblocked the captive sign-in website, but got same result.

Again computer thinks it’s signed in to internet and shows it’s connected. But in fact not connected.

What does Mac Captive Network Assistant do? I have it, but can’t open. Read on other sites that it will manually force the captive sign-in page to open. Is that so? Since it’s part of the MacOS I assume it has a function.

Thanks for info.
