To back up my messages, do i sync to icloud or not?

i’m having a lot of stress about this.

how do i include my messages in my backup? that is, if i get a new phone, how would i ensure all my messages + photos are there on my new phone? would i turn off ‘sync to icloud’, in icloud for messages and photos, or would i keep it on?

also, how do i check if my backups are successfully backing up my photos and messages? i really don’t want to lose any of my things.

when i check my photos storage on my iphone, it’s 87 gb. but when i check it on my icloud backups, it’s 68 gb. how come this doesn’t match up? i just did a backup today. and messages doesn’t show up at all under my backup page.

Backing Up Messages:

Use Messages on your Mac - Apple Support

Enable Messages on your iPhone along with your Apple computer, then check and see if the Messages app is enabled on your Mac to see if it exists in it. You'd start up your Mac, not connecting to the Internet, and open the Massages app. Then proceed from there with retrieving it. Important: Be certain you do not connect to the Internet while booting up, as syncing would delete it. So, power off your router to avoid the connection.
