Do I need iTunes on my Mac to download contacts from my iphone to my mac? Any suggestions on how to do this is welcome.

I let mine automatically sync via iCloud. See: Set up iCloud for Contacts on all your devices - Apple Support

The iTunes app for Mac computers was discontinued and replaced when macOS Catalina was released. It cannot be installed on Macs that are running Catalina or later. See the following Apple article for information about the replacement apps: What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support

If you want to sync contacts without using iCloud on a Mac running Catalina or later, use Finder as described in Sync contacts and calendars onto your Mac and iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (English)
