Erase Assistant thinks i'm still logged in to old Apple iD

I'm having a problem very similar to this one:

Erase assistant problem - Apple Community

I have old laptop I want to erase.

I have logged-out of my Apple ID.

If I open Find My, it says "Sign in to access devices" so it thinks I have signed-out as well.

But, when I run Erase Assistant ("Erase All Content and Settings...") it throws up a dialog that says "Sign Out of Find My" and prompts me for a password for an old Apple ID.

I changed the ID (email address) of my Apple ID, I didn't create a second one. So the name of the Apple ID is the old email of my current account. But if I enter my current Apple ID password, or what I remember as the previous one, neither works. So it's trying to get me to sign in to an Apple ID that effectively doesn't exist anymore (because I changed the name).

I cancelled Erase Assistant and re-signed-in to my Apple ID, and it still shows "Find My" is signed out.

How do I get past this?

I had the same frustrating issue as you, and I finally got it to work with this solution:

Turn Off Find My Mac in iCloud

  1. Sign back in using your current Apple ID.
  2. In System Settings, click on your name and then choose “iCloud”.
  3. Under “Apps Using iCloud,” choose “Show More Apps…”
  4. Set “Find My Mac” to “Off”.

Now return to Erase Assistant and begin a new attempt to erase your Mac. If your error was the same as mine, it should now go through.

Best wishes!
