i need to show n/a in some empty cells, but i can't see how to do that in a custom data format. there are no rules that allow for this that i can see. i have a rule set up to show a suffix when a number is entered in that cell, and added a rule to show n/a when the cell is =0, but not how to add text when it's empty. however, this rule works in a cell that has a formula in it.

Can you not edit the formula to return "N/A" instead of a blank result? Wouldn't that take care of the issue?

No. That would be a circular reference. Conditional Highlighting may show what you want to show.
Select those cells, then Conditional Highlighting > Add a Rule > Cell > Cell is blank > Red Fill.

Sorry, a bit of confusion there. There are no formulae in the cells i want to show n/a. What i meant was that i found the format did work in cells with formulae. Could i put a formula in these cells that doesn’t do anything except show n/a? They are just fields for entering numbers, the calculations are done in other cells.
