apple may not be in a position for them to make such a update, and I assume they do also not offer it for other third party product they sell in their online store
the only ones 100% sure to be able to access the newer firmware and have the protocol to apply it to sonys controllers would be sony, if they provided public access to their firmware files and access protocol to communicate with their controllers by usb, would mean apple would have to apply a amount of R&D resources to provide support to third-party hardware.
doubt they would, and I doubt sony would make it an open protocol third parties could access, because besides those with macs or linux boxes, there would be no demand/requirement for such access
